In the final days of completing an environmental engineering degree at MIT, I put a contract on a one bedroom condo in the Park Fairfax community of Alexandria, VA. At the time, the purchase made sense; it was a buyer's market and the total initial costs to purchase were actually less than the security deposit on a similar apartment. With little experience in real estate at the time, I didn't realize the value of this purchase and was more focused on beginning a career in IT consulting with Accenture. After five years, the value of the condo tripled and allowed me a springboard to pursue an interest in real estate development.

I moved to DC to rehab a century old home just a few blocks from the Georgia Avenue Petworth metro station, which began my interest in real estate development. I also became a licensed real estate agent in DC in 2002 and continued on to rehab homes, develop buildings and manage construction projects in DC and VA.
